The Menendez brothers may face a possible sentence review after Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón recommended on October 24, 2024, that the brothers should be deemed eligible for immediate release on bail if approved by a judge. Lyle and Erik Menendez gained notoriety after the murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in 1989. They have spent over three decades in prison and are currently incarcerated at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility. Although their family was known for their wealth, the central question throughout their case has been why they committed the crime.
To learn more about the reasons behind their actions, read on.
The Menendez brothers fatally shot their parents in their Beverly Hills home with shotguns. Although they were not initially arrested, they spent part of their inheritance before being apprehended.
During the trials in 1993 and 1996, many believed that the brothers committed the murders to secure their inheritance. However, they claimed during the trial that they had suffered from abuse throughout their childhood. The accusations stated that their mother was addicted to alcohol and drugs, and their father sexually abused them. Recently, Roy Rossello, a former member of the boy band Menudo, also accused Jose Menendez of sexually assaulting him when he was younger.
These allegations became central in the first trial, leading to its overturn. Ultimately, the brothers were sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole in 1996.
At a press conference, Prosecutor Gascón stated: «There is no justification for murder… because even if you are wronged, the right path is to go to the police, ask for help», - but added: «I believe they have served their debt to society». Although Gascón expressed his recommendation, the final decision lies with the judge.
