The Menendez Brothers: new evidence and upcoming hearing The Menendez Brothers: new evidence and upcoming hearing
The Menendez brothers' case has recently attracted attention due to new shows telling their story and new evidence that has come to light. Lyle and Erik Menendez are currently serving their sentence at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego, California, serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole after being sentenced in 1996 for the murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills home. According to Variety, the brothers are scheduled for a court hearing on November 29.

To learn more about the new evidence in their case and what may happen next, keep reading.

The brothers faced two trials: the first in 1993, which ended in a mistrial, and the second in 1996, which led to their conviction. Initially, many believed that the motive for the murder was their desire to inherit their parents' estate. However, during the trials, the brothers claimed that they were emotionally, physically, and sexually abused by their parents.

Recently, two pieces of evidence have emerged that may support the claims of sexual abuse by their father, Jose Menendez. The Los Angeles prosecutor presented a letter written by Erik to his cousin Andy Cano, stating, according to the New York Post: «I've been trying to avoid dad. It’s still happening, Andy, but now it’s worse for me». The letter also stated: «I never know when it’s going to happen, and it drives me crazy. Every night I stay awake, thinking he might come in».

Additionally, according to CBS, Roy Rosselló, a former member of the 1980s boy band Menudo, claimed that he was sexually abused by Jose Menendez when he was in the group and still a minor.

At present, the case has not been reopened. The upcoming court hearing will determine whether further proceedings will be held or the possibility of a new trial.
