The Menendez Brothers: new evidence and upcoming court hearing The Menendez Brothers: new evidence and upcoming court hearing
From renewed attention to their case to new evidence and an upcoming court hearing, the Menendez brothers are once again the subject of wide discussion, years after they killed their parents, Kitty and Jose Menendez, in 1989, when they were 21 and 18 years old. Lyle and Erik are serving life sentences without the possibility of parole and remain incarcerated at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego, California. Their case, which made them famous, recently attracted the attention of a new generation through shows such as the Netflix documentary and Ryan Murphy’s «Monsters»: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Now, at the ages of 56 and 53, they may face a new outcome.

To stay informed about the Menendez brothers' case, Hollywood Life has gathered key information.

The Menendez brothers' court hearing is scheduled for November 29, 2024, according to Variety. This comes after evidence was discovered indicating that their father, Jose Menendez, sexually abused his children. «We were provided with evidence. We were provided with a photocopy of a letter that was allegedly sent by one of the brothers to another family member, stating that he was a victim of abuse», - shared Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon, according to the publication. He also mentioned: «We also have evidence provided by the defense, their attorneys, that one of the members of the Menudo group claimed that he was abused by his father».

It is currently unclear whether the brothers will face a retrial, as the court hearing has not yet taken place and is only a preliminary hearing.

During their trials, the brothers claimed that they were abused throughout their childhood by their parents. Their lawyer Leslie Abramson claimed that the murders were committed in self-defense. She told The Washington Post in 1996: «They are not killers. They are troubled children in a very difficult and grotesque home environment, and they broke». At that time, many believed that the motive was the inheritance money from their parents.
