The Menendez brothers are convicted of killing their parents: how were they caught?

Lyle Menendez and Erik Menendez killed their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in August 1989 after allegedly suffering from physical, emotional, and sexual abuse in their home. Although the brothers were not initially suspects in the case, the police received a tip from someone the brothers had not previously met.
Erik confessed to his therapist, Jerome Oziel, about the crime he and Lyle committed, but the doctor did not immediately report it to the police. Instead, the psychologist told his then-lover, Judalon Smith, and recorded some of their, Erik and Lyle’s, conversations.
After Jerome broke up with Judalon, she informed authorities about his audio recordings of the confession to the murder. Although initially there was a right to confidentiality between doctor and patient, the judge admitted the recordings as admissible evidence in the brothers' trial because Jerome claimed that Lyle had threatened him.
According to the Los Angeles Times, during the Menendez trial, Judalon stated that Jerome «brainwashed her, programmed her, and left her a victim, scared, and traumatized».
«She said she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and compared herself to a prisoner of war», - the publication reported in 1993. «Testifying, Smith described how she once faked a suicide so Oziel could find her. She said she once made him an IOU for 500 sexual acts. She once sent him a card that read: 'If only hugs could be expressed in words'».
According to her LinkedIn profile, Judalon currently works as an EMT technician at AAA EMT and is based in Beverly Hills, California. Her «about me» section reads: «I am a low-key, high-energy person. I believe no one should work, but everyone should engage in a productive hobby that supports their lifestyle and in some way benefits others. I have many edges and talents, so I have had many careers depending on the adventure».
After being convicted of murdering their parents in 1996, Lyle and Erik were sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Initially, they were sent to different prisons in California, but in 2018 they were reunited at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego.
