The Menendez brothers are back in the headlines thanks to the recent release of the Netflix series «Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story». They were convicted of murdering their parents, Jose and Mary Louise «Kitty» Menendez, in 1989, when Lyle was 21 years old and Erik was 18, in their Beverly Hills home. Shortly before committing the crime, the brothers spent approximately $ 700,000 before their arrest in 1990.

During the trials, they claimed to have been victims of abuse by their parents throughout their childhood, accusing their late father of sexual abuse and their mother of drug addiction and alcoholism. The brothers are currently incarcerated at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in California.

Lyle and Erik were sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole in 1996. Although they were initially separated for much of their incarceration, leading to limited communication, they were reunited in April 2018 at the same facility in California.

In May 2023, the brothers' lawyers filed a petition for a review of their sentences. According to court documents obtained by the Los Angeles Times, the petition states: «New evidence not only shows that Jose Menendez was a cruel and brutal man who sexually abused children, but it strongly suggests that he actually continued to abuse Erik Menendez until 1988».

The document continues to claim: «Instead, the crime was manslaughter, not murder. The killing occurred in a condition of imperfect self-defense, after years of physical and sexual abuse by their parents». Despite the petition, the brothers remain in prison.

How were the Menendez brothers caught?

Seven months after the murder, the brothers were arrested after their psychologist, Dr. Jerome Oziel, revealed that Erik had confessed during a therapy session. This information was passed on to the police by Oziel’s mistress, Judalon Smyth.

Although both Lyle and Erik remain behind bars, it has not stopped them from building relationships. Lyle, now 56, has been married twice while in prison. He first married Anna Eriksson in 1996, but they divorced in 2001. Two years later, in 2003, he married Rebecca Sneed, and they remain together.

As for Erik, now 53, he met his wife, Tammi Saccoman, through letters while in prison. Their relationship blossomed, and they have been married since 1999.
