The Menendez brothers have once again captured public attention recently, first with Ryan Murphy’s series «Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story» and now with the release of their own documentary film «The Menendez Brothers» on Netflix on October 7, 2024. The brothers were sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole after murdering their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in 1989. Their case was widely covered in the 1990s, following their trial in 1993 and their conviction in 1996.
Erik Menendez’s lawyer, Leslie Abramson, played a key role in their defense. Abramson argued that the murders were acts of self-defense, as Lyle and Erik claimed they had been subjected to violence by both parents throughout their childhood. «I've represented people accused of murder for 27 years, and these guys just don’t fit anyone I’ve ever represented», - Abramson told The Washington Post in 1996. «They're not killers. They’re troubled kids in a very difficult and disgusting home environment, and they broke». To learn more about the lawyer, keep reading.
Born in Queens, New York in 1943, Leslie Abramson became one of the most well-known defense attorneys of the 1990s. She represented Erik Menendez during his trial, working tirelessly to prove that the brothers were victims of abuse at the hands of their parents.
According to Radio Times, Abramson has since retreated from public life. Her license to practice law is currently listed as inactive by the State Bar of California.
In Ryan Murphy’s series «Monsters», - actress Ari Graynor portrayed Abramson.
Lyle and Erik Menendez are currently serving their sentences at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in California. Initially housed in separate prisons, they were reunited in 2018. Both brothers continue to serve life sentences without the possibility of parole. Recently, new evidence of alleged sexual abuse by their father has been discovered. According to Variety, Los Angeles prosecutor George Gascón stated: «We have been provided with evidence. We have been provided with a copy of a letter that was purportedly sent by one of the brothers to another family member, stating that he was a victim of abuse». He also added: «We also have evidence provided by the defense, attorneys, that one of the members of the Menudo group claimed that his father had abused him». The trial for the Menendez brothers is scheduled for November 29, 2024.
