Criminal brothers Lyle Menendez and Erik Menendez will see their case on the big screen. Netflix adapted their case into a season of the anthology Monsters titled Monsters: The Menendez Brothers Story. But what exactly did these criminals do to become two of the most infamous criminals in modern history?
Lyle (real name: Joseph Lyle Menendez) and Erik were born two years apart, Lyle was born in January 1968 in New York, and Erik in 1970 in New Jersey. They lived with their parents, Jose Enrique Menendez and Mary Louise «Kitty» Andersen, in Hopewell Township, New Jersey.
Lyle and Erik shot their parents in August 1989 with shotguns. The brothers shot them 14 times in their home in Beverly Hills. During the initial investigation of the crime scene, the police initially believed the mafia was involved due to the brutality of the murders of Jose and Mary.
Although authorities initially did not suspect the brothers, the police received a tip from Erik’s psychologist, Dr. Jerome Oziel, who told his mistress at the time, Judalon Smith, that Erik had confessed to killing his and Lyle’s parents. In 1990, Erik and Lyle were arrested. The judge ruled that the recordings between Erik and his doctor were admissible forms of evidence because Erik’s doctor claimed his patient had threatened him, breaking their doctor-patient confidentiality.
Erik and Lyle were officially charged in 1992 with the murder of their mother and father, and their trial in 1993 made national headlines. During the trial, both brothers claimed they shot their parents after being subjected to abuse in their childhood. Lyle and Erik accused their late father of sexual abuse, and their late mother of alcoholism and drug addiction.
Since both Lyle and Erik received life sentences without the possibility of parole, they are both behind bars at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego, California.
The brothers got married while in prison. Erik married his wife, Tammi Saccoman, in 1999, and Lyle first married his ex-wife Anna Eriksson in 1996. They eventually divorced in 2001. Two years later, Lyle married his second wife, Rebecca Sneed, in 2003.
