Brian Kohberger, a former criminology graduate student, arrested and charged with the murder of four University of Idaho students in 2022, is set to appear in court this week. The hearings will focus on determining the admissibility of evidence for his upcoming trial this summer.
After the murders of Keily Gonzalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20, Brian was arrested at his parents' home in Pennsylvania on December 30, 2022. He is the youngest child of Michael Kohberger Jr. and MaryAnn Kohberger and has two older sisters, Amanda and Melissa Kohberger.
Following Brian’s arrest, his family released a statement through his public defender expressing support for Brian and offering condolences to the victims' families, as reported by The New York Post. «We have fully cooperated with law enforcement in an effort to find the truth and support his presumption of innocence, rather than judge based on unknown facts and make erroneous assumptions», - the statement said. «There are no words that could adequately express the sorrow we feel, and we pray for them every day».
As Brian is set to appear in court this week, here is everything you need to know about the suspect’s family.
Both of Brian’s parents worked for many years in the Pleasant Valley school district. Michael worked as a maintenance worker in the school district from 2006 to 2019, according to The New York Post. Several weeks after the murders, Michael flew to Washington to return home to Albrightsville, Pennsylvania, with his son, as reported by Newsweek. In mid-December, the father and son drove about 2500 miles in a white Hyundai Elantra, which police had been asked to watch for. Brian stayed with the family for the holidays until his arrest on December 30.
Both of Brian’s parents were also called to testify before a grand jury in May 2023, as reported by CNN. Sources told the news agency that the lawyer tried to cancel the summons but was unsuccessful.
After the Idaho murders, it was revealed that Brian had been arrested in 2014 for stealing his sister’s phone, as reported by ABC News. It was Michael who contacted law enforcement about the stolen property. Brian did not serve jail time for this crime.
MaryAnn Kohberger also worked in the Pleasant Valley school district until 2020. She worked as a paraprofessional, assisting children with special needs, as reported by The Post.
In addition to her work at the school, MaryAnn sometimes wrote letters to the local newspaper Pocono Record. In June 2022, she wrote a letter reflecting on school shootings in America. She also shared a poem written by her daughter about the tragic shooting in Uvalde, Texas. «As I sat this morning, shaken by yet another school shooting, I was faced with the question of what actions need to be taken to stop this madness. What answer? Gun control measures? Intervention in mental health?» MaryAnn wrote in the newspaper. «As I read the poem, I thought, whatever solution we come to, I pray that we consider the children before the guns».
Little is known about Brian’s younger sister, Amanda. After her brother’s arrest, it was reported that both she and her sister Melissa were fired from their jobs in March 2023, according to The New York Post. While it is unclear what Amanda did, she was once an actress, with one credit in the 2011 horror film «Two Days Back», - according to IMDb.
In her letter to Pocono Record, MaryAnn wrote that Melissa worked as a psychotherapist in New Jersey.
As mentioned earlier, her mother also shared a poem she wrote about the Uvalde shooting, which resulted in the deaths of 19 students and two teachers, with 17 others injured.
