Brian Wilson, the visionary force behind the Beach Boys, was one of the founders of one of the most influential American groups of the 1960s. Together with his brothers Carl and Dennis Wilson, cousin Mike Love, and childhood friend Al Jardine, Brian helped create the sunny sound of California pop that defined a generation. Their breakthrough album, Surfin' Safari, was released in 1962 shortly after signing with Capitol Records, and tracks like «Fun, Fun, Fun» remain culturally significant, recently featured in the trailer for the 2023 film «Barbie» starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

While Wilson’s musical legacy is undeniable, his personal life was marked by emotional complexity. Often described as a pop genius, he struggled for decades with mental health issues, including diagnoses of schizoaffective disorder and symptoms of bipolar disorder. These issues affected his relationships — some tumultuous, others deeply supportive. In January 2024, Brian shared the sad news that his second wife, Melinda, had passed away at the age of 77.

After his death in 2025, many remember the man behind the music. Here’s everything you need to know about Brian’s marriages and romantic relationships over the years.

Brian was married to former model Melinda Kae Ledbetter since 1995. But the couple had been dating for many years prior, from 1986 to 1989. According to The U.S. Sun, Brian and the Colorado native beauty Melinda tied the knot on February 6, 1995 in California. They met when she was working at a luxury car dealership in Los Angeles in 1986 and laid the foundation for their long relationship.

«I remember meeting her at her dealership, Cadillac, and saying, 'Oh, what a beautiful girl,'» he said in an ABC Nightline interview in 2015. «She's a beautiful girl». He added, «I just said to myself, 'Oh, I think I’ll see her again sometime.'» Melinda was drawn to the kindness of the legendary musician. «That's what attracted me to him, he was so sweet», - she said.

The couple raised five children together — daughters Daria, Delanie, and Dakota, and sons Dylan and Dash. She also served as his manager.

On January 30, 2024, Brian and his children announced Melinda’s death at the age of 77. They shared that she passed away peacefully at home on the same day. «Our five children and I are just in tears. We are lost», - he captioned a set of old photos of Melinda on Instagram. «Melinda was more than my wife. She was my savior. She gave me the emotional security I needed for my career. She inspired me to make music that was closest to my heart. She was my anchor. She was everything to us. Please pray for her. Love and mercy, Brian».

Singer Marilyn Rovell was Brian’s first wife, and the couple met and began dating in 1962 when she was just 15 and he was 21. The Rovell family was also musical, and Brian, being close to the family, was invited to live with them. Marilyn and Brian initially kept their relationship a secret. However, the romance developed, and they married in December 1964. During the marriage, however, Brian began experiencing emotional issues. He suffered panic attacks and nervous breakdowns. The problem was exacerbated by drug and alcohol use.

According to Wikipedia, Marilyn and Brian moved to the luxurious Bel-Air in Los Angeles as his star rose, and she gave birth to two daughters — Carnie in 1968 and Wendy in 1969. Carnie and Wendy later formed two-thirds of the famous 80s pop group Wilson Phillips.

But the marriage was tumultuous to a shocking degree. Brian engaged in affairs with Marilyn’s sister Diane Rovell and simultaneously with a telephone operator named Debbie Keil. Meanwhile, he told his wife that she should also have affairs. Nevertheless, he cared for his wife, as shown by an unreleased song called «Marilyn Rovell» and his 1964 hit «All Summer Long», - both about her
