Brad Lander, New York City Comptroller, was physically removed from the immigration court in Manhattan in handcuffs on Tuesday, June 17. As seen in the video of the incident, he was forced against the wall and handcuffed by men in masks and plain black shirts, while uniformed officers were visible in the background. Moments before this, Lander had linked arms with his staff and an immigrant who was the target of the arrest after a court hearing. This happened shortly after Senator Alex Padilla was physically removed by officers in Los Angeles, so was Lander arrested?

Lander has been the New York City Comptroller since 2022. The Comptroller is the city’s chief financial officer and chief auditor of its agencies.

As seen in the video of the incident, it appeared that Lander was arrested by masked officers. They were seen handcuffing the Comptroller. According to The Independent, he was taken by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and FBI and Treasury agents.

Additionally, a journalist from The City New York claimed to have heard one officer ask another, «Do you want to arrest the Comptroller?» just moments before.

After Lander was handcuffed and taken out of the hallway, he could be heard saying, «Show me your order, show me your badge» and «I will release if you show me a court order. I would like to see the order, and then I will release».

«I'm not interfering, I’m standing right here in the hallway», - he said, according to The Independent. «You have no authority to arrest US citizens, demanding a court order».

The exact details of Lander’s apparent arrest by masked officers are still unclear.

It is unclear why Lander was arrested by officers, but according to his wife Meg Barnett, an immigration court judge «scolded» Lander for entering the courtroom and threatened to lock the door, The Independent reports.

«I know he will probably be fine, and everyone else in that building risks having their families separated without proper explanation. It’s a disgrace», - Barnett said, according to the publication. «What I saw was shocking and unacceptable… What I saw today is not due process. This is not justice».

Democratic opponents of Lander for mayor, Andrew Cuomo and Zohran Mamdani, both condemned the incident. Mamdani told reporters at the federal building about Lander’s arrest that it is «not about elections», - but about «ensuring the protection of the city and country we love».

«It's about ensuring that New York immigrants who come here for regular check-ins don’t have to fear being separated from their families in the cruelest and most brutal ways», - Mamdani added.

Cuomo, for his part, told reporters about Lander: «Today's arrest is just one example of what Immigration and Customs Enforcement does every day across the country… One can only imagine the fear families across the country face when dealing with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Fear of separation, fear of being taken from school, fear of being detained without legal basis. This is not who we are. This must stop, and it must stop now»
