Brooke Shields always opened up her extensive wardrobe to her daughters, so when it came time for her eldest daughter, Grier Hammond Henchy, to attend her high school prom, she took the opportunity to wear a special dress that once belonged to her mother, who had once said, «Nothing is off limits».
«Her prom dress was my first wedding dress», - Shields said of the dress she wore when she married tennis player Andre Agassi in 1997.
Although their marriage did not last, Shields, referring to her first husband as a «good guy», - said that the dress felt like «a big circle» that «honors something», - adding, «I think it’s great».
Shields first wore the ivory corset dress made of satin when she married the tennis player — with whom she divorced in 1999, before marrying Grier’s father, Chris Henchy, in 2001 — but Grier made some changes to make the dress her own.
«We had to alter it a bit to make it form-fitting and elegant», - said Grier, 18, who had just started her first year at Wake Forest University. «We removed all the fullness because I didn’t want it to be voluminous. And we made it strapless».
«She looked stunning in it», - said the 59-year-old star. «It's such an honor when they want to wear your things. They usually don’t think I’m cool».
When Shields sat down with Oprah Winfrey as part of Oprah Daily’s «Life You Want» class, she shared that one of her daughters was horrified by the amount of dust in her mother’s wardrobe. «If you’re not going to wear these things, I’m going to wear them!» she said.
In addition to the 1997 wedding dress, the college student and IMG model also walked the red carpet at CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute in a black dress by Richard Tyler, which Shields wore to a ball in 2006 when Grier was just six months old. She also dazzled in one of her mother’s old gold dresses that same year.
In 2021, Rowan Francis Henchy — Brooke’s eldest — chose to wear her mother’s red dress, also created by Richard Tyler, to her high school prom.
«I was in New York, downstairs, going through a lot of her old dresses, filming TikToks, and tried on this red dress. I didn’t really want to go through the process of finding a prom dress. I was like, 'If we have something here…' and I found this red dress», - Rowan said of the dress that Brooke originally wore to the Golden Globe Awards ceremony in 1998
