The future of TikTok is uncertain: who will become its buyer by Sunday?

The future of TikTok is in limbo as the company urgently needs a buyer by the deadline this Sunday. Find out what is happening with the possible ban of the app below.
The popular TikTok app from parent company ByteDance is at risk of being banned in the US if no one buys it by January 19, 2025. The app may be banned in the US due to security issues, as it collects «excessive data» and, as reported by the BBC, may allow the Chinese government to allegedly spy on American users.
As the deadline approaches for the official ban of TikTok, Elon Musk may become a new candidate to purchase the popular app. Dan Ives, managing director of Wedbush Securities, shared that Chinese President Xi Jinping and Elon have «strong relationships». He added in his analytical note: «[Musk] is likely one of the many options ByteDance is considering pending the final decision of the Supreme Court and the approaching deadline of January 19 for the ban or divestment of TikTok», - as reported by USA Today. Dan continued to explain why Elon theoretically could become the top contender, stating: «Given the strong and growing alliance between Trump and Musk, this is not a complete shock, as behind the scenes the Trump White House is looking for alternatives if the Supreme Court upholds the ban».
Elon donated a large sum of $ 250 million to Trump’s reelection campaign, according to MSNBC. Elon was also appointed as one of the people leading the Department of Government Efficiency, which focuses on reducing government spending. Despite the connections Elon has with Trump and the Chinese president, a TikTok representative denies these reports and shared with NewsWeek: «We cannot comment on pure fiction».
If TikTok is banned, users will still be able to view and upload content if they already have the app installed on their phone. But if you do not have the app already downloaded on your phone by January 19, you will no longer be able to get it from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, according to E! News. Users remaining in the app will not be able to install app updates, meaning that in the long run the app may become unusable. Joseph Lorenzo Hall, a technologist at the Internet Society, explained to Wired: «The app will start to decay and rot, as either services will stop working — things like content distribution networks or services that feel they can’t risk it due to the ambiguity of language or potential incoming administration»
