Busy Phillips has returned to acting after brain surgery, taking on a role in the CBS series «CooperTino». This is her first project following the removal of a rare tumor.
In an exclusive clip from the episode, which will air on October 15, Phillips plays Natalia, a client who is unsure about working with Michael (Mike Colter) and Olivia (Rachel Keller), who are starting their own law firm. She says, «Well, this is not exactly inspiring confidence», - as she looks around their office, which is still under construction. Olivia asks Natalia for funding for a year, but Natalia cannot offer either a year or anything else.
Phillips also adds that she «can't promise anything» and describes herself as «pretty unreliable these days». She expresses interest in one case and offers to help with a motion to dismiss. As a gift, Natalia gives Olivia and Michael inflatable mattresses, joking, «If you’re just starting out, you’ll need these».
The series «CooperTino» follows a lawyer from Silicon Valley who, after being fired, starts a firm with another laid-off attorney to represent people harmed by technology. Phillips plays a client described as «a beautiful and outspoken first wife of a billionaire in AI» who seeks revenge on her ex-husband.
Phillips, who shares two children with estranged husband Marc Silverstein, noted that the issue of AI is close to her. She shared that AI is not used in their home, and that her daughter and her classmates write all their assignments by hand in response to the rise of AI technology.
The actress also emphasized that the series taught her important lessons, adding that she enjoys playing women who become stronger after the age of 40. After finishing filming the first season, Phillips underwent surgery in early March, just weeks before production on «CooperTino» began. She expressed gratitude for being alive, calling that period «the strangest six months of her life».
Phillips reported that a full body scan confirmed the presence of the tumor, and during the surgery, doctors removed a 2.6-centimeter mass from her brain. She faced additional challenges when she developed a staph infection at the incision site, which required a second surgery. The series «CooperTino» airs Thursdays at 10 PM Eastern Time on CBS and is available for streaming on Paramount+ the following day.
