TikTok was banned and restored over the same weekend. Find out which other apps owned by ByteDance are in limbo below.
TikTok was banned in the US due to security concerns. Since the Chinese company ByteDance owns the popular app, lawmakers feared that the Chinese government could use the app as a means to spy on American citizens and steal their data. The official ban was introduced on January 19, 2025, but users were already unable to scroll or upload content a day before the ban took effect. Users encountered the following message when trying to use the app: «Sorry, TikTok is currently unavailable. The TikTok ban law has been passed in the US. Unfortunately, this means you cannot use TikTok at this time. We are pleased that President Trump has indicated he will work with us to resolve the issue of restoring TikTok after taking office. Please stay tuned! In the meantime, you can still log in to download your data».
Shortly after that, TikTok was restored, and users received a new widely circulated message stating: «Thanks to President Trump’s efforts, TikTok has returned to the US». On Sunday, Donald Trump turned to Truth Social to share that he will use his executive powers to: «Extend the deadline for the bans to take effect so that we can negotiate the protection of our national security. Americans deserve to see our exciting inauguration on Monday, as well as other events and conversations», - according to CNN. The extension may last 90 days to work on a long-term agreement. Trump hopes for a 50−50 joint agreement that would include an American owner, along with ByteDance.
According to NewsWeek, ByteDance owns apps such as CapCut, Lemon 8, Gauth, Hypic, Lark, Melolo, Fizzo, Tokopedia, and Marvel Snap.
The editorial app CapCut remains in the shadows despite TikTok’s restoration over the weekend. When users try to log in, they receive the following message: «Sorry, CapCut is currently unavailable. The CapCut ban law has been passed in the US. Unfortunately, this means you cannot use CapCut at this time. We are working on restoring our service in the US. Please stay tuned!» The return of CapCut is currently up in the air. Meanwhile, Instagram announced Edits, which is their new editing service
