Budget cuts: Late Night With Seth Meyers' house band is leaving Budget cuts: Late Night With Seth Meyers' house band is leaving
«Late Night with Seth Meyers will look and sound a little different this fall. The late-night show’s house band will not be returning for the upcoming season.

«Seth Meyers and Mike Shoemaker, the showrunner, personally invited us to talk about this», - keyboardist Eli Janney shared with Vulture in an interview published on Tuesday, June 11. «They expressed their regrets and disappointment about it. They tried to resolve it for months, but in the end, NBC insisted on where the budget should go. It’s not just the band; there’s a whole crew that works with the band, so there are a lot of people involved here».

According to Eli, NBC imposed budget cuts on the show, and changes had to be made to the house band, which also includes guitarist Seth Jabour and bassist Syd Butler. Fred Armisen was previously the leader of the band, but in recent years he has performed more as a guest artist.

«Unfortunately, this is the reality of television and a shrinking market — streaming, which is eating it up, and YouTube, which is eating that up», - Eli explained. «Budgets have been cut and cut and cut everywhere… Music is becoming less valuable».

The band has been a part of Late Night with Seth Meyers for all 11 seasons when the show was on the air. In his interview, Eli said that viewers will still be able to hear the 8G Band because they plan to record a «whole bunch» of music for the show, which will be used for guest introductions and returns after commercial breaks.

«When looking at the current list of late-night shows on the network, only After Midnight on CBS operates without a house band. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Conan O’Brien’s show on TBS did not have a band in its final years when it turned into a one-and-a-half-hour show.

Last month, Seth extended his deal with NBCUniversal until 2028. The news came just a few months after he celebrated the 10th anniversary of Late Night with Seth Meyers.

«Over the past 10 years, Seth has found a connection with his audience night after night with sharp monologues and established segments like A Closer Look and Day Drinking», - said Katie Hockmeyer, Executive Vice President of Late Night Programming at NBCUniversal Entertainment, in a statement to THR. «We are so excited to continue this legendary franchise with Seth at the helm and watch as he continues to elevate the success of Late Night»
