The Director of National Intelligence (DNI) oversees and coordinates the activities of the U.S. Intelligence Community (IC), which includes agencies such as the CIA, NSA, and FBI. The DNI facilitates the exchange of intelligence information between agencies, supports decision-making in national security matters, and provides timely intelligence assessments to the President and senior officials. The role also includes managing the budget of intelligence agencies and serving as the President’s principal intelligence advisor.

The President appoints the DNI with the advice and consent of the Senate.

Gabbard appeared before the Senate Intelligence Committee on January 30th.

At the time of publication, Gabbard had not been confirmed.

During her confirmation hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday, many concerns were raised, and Gabbard’s responses failed to alleviate them. As one of President Trump’s more controversial nominees, it is unknown whether she will be confirmed for the position.

One of the concerns expressed by many Republicans was Gabbard’s position on former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, who leaked classified information exposing extensive global surveillance programs of the U.S. government. Senators from the party insisted that Gabbard label Snowden as a «traitor» and acknowledge that he «harmed» U.S. national security, but Gabbard refused to agree
