Today, in connection with the alleged assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, Hinckley Jr. shared on X: «Violence is not the way. Give peace a chance».

On March 30, 1981, the then 25-year-old Hinckley attempted to kill President Ronald Reagan at the Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C. Hinckley fired six shots, one of which hit Reagan in the chest, narrowly missing his heart. White House press secretary James Brady, Secret Service agent Tim McCarthy, and police officer Thomas Delahanty were also wounded during the attack.

Hinckley claimed he was trying to impress actress Jodie Foster, whom he was obsessed with. Reagan survived the assassination attempt, and Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and sent to a psychiatric facility.

After his release, Hinckley has been trying to pursue music, hoping that people will give him a second chance and listen to his folk music. Hinckley said that writing music is a reflection of his desire to maintain a positive mental attitude with themes of love and redemption.

«I want people to know that I have come to peace, I am now a supporter of peace», - he said. «I know I am remembered for an act of violence, but I am a completely different person than in 1981».

However, public redemption seems to be out of reach for him, at least as a performing musician. Earlier concert venues booked him but canceled at the last minute, which he called «provocative bookings». His performances have been canceled in New York, Virginia, and Hamden, Connecticut.

In 2022, speaking with Fred Pessaro at CREEM, he talked about a concert he booked in Brooklyn that quickly sold out, but the venue canceled it, citing safety reasons and issuing a statement about «mental health and potential redemption».

«I had plans to play a few live shows, but I have faced resistance. In the past few months, three concerts have been canceled, it was really disappointing».

In March of this year, he was scheduled to perform in Connecticut on the 30th, the anniversary of the assassination attempt, at «one of Connecticut’s newest concert venues». However, he announced in a post that the concert was postponed. He then joked in frustration, «With all my concerts being canceled, you could say I have become a victim of cancel culture!»
