Former Cornell student Matthew Ingalls accuses rape victim
One of the former students of the Chi Phi fraternity at Cornell University, accused of gang rape, claimed that he himself became a victim of sexual violence. This occurred during an investigation conducted by the university.

On September 16, a lawsuit was filed in the New York State Supreme Court by a student known as «Jane Doe», - alleging that seven Chi Phi brothers forced her to consume ketamine, as well as gave her marijuana and alcohol before the rape at the fraternity house on October 19, 2024. According to documents obtained by ABC News, Cornell’s investigation began after an anonymous report indicated that fraternity leadership asked a potential witness to remain silent about the incident.

One of the accused, Matthew Ingalls, who allegedly invited Jane Doe to the fraternity house, stated that he was too drunk to give consent and accused her of sexual violence. In an email to the investigator, Ingalls indicated that he was not informed of his rights as a victim and expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation process.

Jane Doe’s attorney, Thomas Giffra, called Ingalls' statement «absurd» and noted that it demonstrates the lengths to which the accused are willing to go to avoid accountability. Ingalls and other fraternity members denied Doe’s allegations.

The case has attracted widespread attention, and New York Governor Kathy Hochul appointed State Attorney General Letitia James to initiate a criminal investigation following the filing of the lawsuit. Ingalls and another accused, Jonathan Newell, were expelled from the university, while others received various disciplinary measures. Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff described the incident as «deeply troubling» and noted that it raises important questions about sexual violence and party culture. Criminal charges against Ingalls and others have not yet been filed.
