Former TODAY show host and The View moderator Meredith Vieira recently lost her husband, Richard Cohen, after his decade-long battle with multiple sclerosis (MS). TODAY show hosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie shared this news live during the January 7, 2025 episode, before Hoda’s departure. Additionally, Meredith’s former colleague from The View, Joy Behar, also shared the news.
«Our dear friend and original moderator of The View, Meredith Vieira, wanted us to share with all of you that her husband, Richard Cohen, passed away on Christmas Eve», - Joy said. «Many people who watched these shows remember Richard. Meredith told us that it was fitting because he came into this world on Valentine’s Day and left on a holiday, so it seemed like perfect symmetry. In his memoir 'Blindsided,' Richard was remarkably candid, even humorous, about his long battle with MS — he had multiple sclerosis for a long time — and other health battles. I remember he had one bout with cancer, which was devastating for her and, of course, for him. But he never allowed illness to control or define his life. That was the truth about him».
Since Meredith left the world of television, viewers have wanted to know more about her marriage and her late husband’s health.
Cohen was a journalist, author, and television producer, most known for his work as a producer at CBS News and CNN.
Meredith and Richard were married in June 1986 and spent most of their relationship in upstate New York.
Cohen was open about his battle with MS, which he was diagnosed with at the age of 25. According to the Mayo Clinic, the disease causes destruction of the protective covering of nerves. MS can lead to numbness in the body, physical weakness, difficulty walking, and changes in vision.
In 1999, Cohen was diagnosed with colon cancer, which he bravely fought. However, a year later he was once again attacked by cancer, as reported by Brain & Life.
Although he bravely fought through several health crises, according to The Hudson Independent, Cohen passed away on December 24, 2024 after a two-month battle with pneumonia.
Meredith and Richard raised three children named Benjamin, Gabriel, and Lily
