CBS Sports has officially ended its partnership with Tony Romo following his arrest for driving under the influence in July. In a statement made on October 2, the network said, «CBS Sports and Tony Romo have mutually agreed to part ways. We thank Tony for his contributions over the past nine years and wish him all the best in the future».
Former NFL defensive end J.J. Watt will continue to work with commentator Jim Nantz at CBS Sports for the remainder of the season. All other broadcasting teams will remain unchanged.
In his statement, Romo said, «I am proud of what I have accomplished at CBS Sports over the last nine years. I approached my role as a game analyst the same way I approach everything in life — with a desire to win and be the best. I plan to use this time to rest, something I have never done before, and focus on my health and family before moving on to the next opportunity. I am grateful for my time at CBS Sports and for the support of my family and friends, as well as the NFL community and fans».
Romo, 46, was arrested on July 23 on suspicion of driving under the influence after participating in a golf tournament in Wisconsin. He failed several sobriety tests and was taken into custody. An «open container of alcohol» was found in Romo’s vehicle, although the specific type was not disclosed. In body camera footage, Romo told police he was «on his way to meet his grandparents».
Romo also received a citation for «refusing a breath test after arrest», - according to court documents. CBS Sports temporarily suspended him from work on July 31. In August, a representative for Romo stated that «Tony fully accepts responsibility for his actions and has taken active steps to resolve this isolated civil matter».
Romo pleaded guilty to the DUI charge on September 1, the same day he publicly commented on his arrest for the first time. He stated, «I fully acknowledge this. Multiple back surgeries ended my career sooner than I expected and left me with chronic, debilitating pain. This pain led to an addiction to painkillers, and my attempts to get off those medications led to an excessive dependence on alcohol».
Following his guilty plea, Romo was also stripped of his driving privileges for six months and required to undergo an alcohol assessment program. Additionally, he must install an ignition interlock device on any vehicle he owns, registers, or operates for a period of at least one year after his driving privileges are restored.
