Lady A member Charles Kelley announced a serious diagnosis — he has been diagnosed with a rare blood cancer, multiple myeloma. He shared this on Instagram on September 29, noting that the reason for the examination was random rib fractures.
According to the Mayo Clinic, multiple myeloma occurs in plasma cells, which are a type of white blood cell. Kelley mentioned that treatment could help reduce complications and alleviate symptoms. He emphasized that, despite the rarity of the disease, he feels healthy and is hopeful for a positive outcome, as treatment methods have significantly improved over the past five years.
The initial six months of treatment will not be «super invasive», - allowing him to continue working and performing at the group’s Christmas concerts. Kelley also shared that he is inspired by a friend’s experience who is going through a similar situation.
After the announcement of his diagnosis, he received support from colleagues in the music industry, including Shay Mooney, Karen Fairchild, and Martina McBride. His bandmate Dave Haywood expressed support in the comments, writing, «We are all here for you!»
Kelley explained that he decided to share this news with fans because he believes that openness during difficult times can be healing. He compared it to how he shared his experience of battling addiction when he underwent treatment for alcohol dependence in 2022.
