Frequent flyers are concerned about aviation incidents in 2025: statistics, expert opinions, flight safety

Frequent travelers are concerned about a series of aviation incidents that occurred in January 2025. In the first weeks of the new year, an American Airlines plane collided with a Black Hawk helicopter near Washington, a medical transport plane crashed in Northeast Philadelphia, and a United Airlines flight began smoking just before takeoff in Houston, Texas. Naturally, Americans are questioning whether it is still safe to fly, let alone why there are so many aviation disasters and incidents happening in the United States.
Below you can read about reported cases of collisions, crashes, and other incidents involving airplanes in the US in 2025.
According to statements from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) about incidents and accidents, in America in 2025 there were about 15 aviation disasters and/or minor collisions involving both commercial and smaller aircraft. In addition to disasters and collisions, there were several minor incidents involving commercial and non-commercial aircraft. The administration has compiled all minor and major incidents on its website.
There were several aviation incidents in one month, and they were caused by various problems. The mid-air collision between an American Airlines plane and a Black Hawk helicopter is still under investigation, as is the crash of a medical plane in Philadelphia. Other aviation incidents involving non-commercial aircraft were caused by technical failures, such as the crash of a small plane in Fullerton, California.
Experts point to statistics proving that flying in the US is still safe. According to aviation safety expert Anthony Brickhouse, passengers are «safer in your flight than when you drove to the airport… statistically speaking», - he told CNN.
«Air travel remains the safest mode of transportation», - Brickhouse insists. «And in the safety realm, we identify trends… something that happens over and over again. And in the safety world, if you have near misses happening all the time, sooner or later you’re going to have a mid-air collision».
However, Brickhouse noted that he believes it is «important for passengers to be persistent and demand that the government and various organizations do everything possible to ensure maximum safety in air transportation».
In 2024, Bloomberg reported that it was the deadliest year for the aviation industry since 2018; around 300 fatal incidents occurred worldwide last year
