Chet Hanks shared his experience of participating in the reality show The Surreal Life: Villa of Secrets, being almost 10 years sober.
The eldest son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, who became sober before becoming a father to his daughter Michaiah in April 2016, whom he shares with ex Tiffany Miles, told Page Six that he did not feel tempted to drink during the filming of Surreal Life, despite being surrounded by alcohol.
«Yeah, I don’t even think about it», - he said. «It's not even on my radar — the thought of drinking or anything like that. So it’s not even a blip on the radar».
However, the 33-year-old previously admitted in an episode of the Raw Talk podcast with Bradley Martin that his biggest problem was not alcohol, but cocaine. «With the drug that I had the biggest problem with, it’s f***ing cocaine, man».
«I would go do cocaine with cocaine addicts», - he continued, «and they would be like, 'Hey, chill out, bro. Wait a second. Give it like 15 minutes.'»
He added, «It was never enough for me».
When he was 17, his parents — who noticed «such a drastic change that it was alarming», - as he said — staged an intervention.
«I wake up in the morning», - he explained, «4 a.m., and there’s two huge dudes standing at the foot of my bed, looking at me. And they’re like, 'You're coming with us.'»
Chet mentioned, «It's not against them, dude». He also noted how his parents «supported» his decision to join the cast of the reality show, as he told Us Weekly.
«They definitely said [no reality shows] in terms of typical reality shows. When this came up, we discussed it and everyone agreed. We all agreed that this could be a really great opportunity for me, and it was perfect».
«They were really supportive. I was stoked, and everyone was», - the rapper noted.
As an actor, rapper, and YouTuber, Chet has appeared in recurring roles on TV shows such as «Empire», - «Shameless», - and «Your Honor», - as well as guest-starring on «How I Met Your Mother» and «Atlanta». The Surreal Life was Chet’s first experience in unscripted reality TV, and he suggested that, despite nearly a decade of sobriety, newly sober people should be more mindful of their surroundings.
«For those who may be in the early stages of sobriety, where it’s still tempting, my advice would just be, like, remove yourself from that environment», - he suggested.
Hanks also mentioned that he was grateful for Tyler Posey’s support on the show, as the actor from «Teen Wolf», - 32, is also completely sober after experimenting with sobriety for many years.
«It was cool to have another sober person in the house, which I definitely didn’t expect», - Chet told the publication. «It was a huge surprise because, obviously, you know, in most places I go, I’m the only sober person. So from the get-go, that was cool and what we bonded on»
