Four people were killed in a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia on Wednesday, the state Bureau of Investigation reported, adding that the suspect was detained and is in custody.

At least nine other people were hospitalized with injuries, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported, including one who was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, one of the largest trauma centers in the region.

The suspect, who is alive and in custody, is reportedly a student at Apalachee High School, ABC News reports.

Law enforcement sources had previously reported that approximately 30 people were injured in the shooting. It is unclear how many of these injuries were from gunfire, but it was mentioned that not all injuries were from bullets.

Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith confirmed «multiple injuries» at a press conference, stating that it will take «several days» to determine what happened. «Every minute we are learning something new», - he said.

Officials in Barrow County, Georgia, reported that the shooting occurred around 9:30 a.m. at the high school.

Apalachee High School, located approximately 50 miles from downtown Atlanta, is a rural campus with around 1800 students in grades 9−12. The school was «cleared for dismissal», - but all other schools in Barrow County were placed on a «soft lockdown», - according to the county.

«The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office says this is for everyone’s safety right now. Please do not go to your child’s school at this time. We cannot release students during lockdown», - the school administration reported. «We will let you know as soon as [the sheriff’s office] says it’s all clear for dismissal».

Senior Sergio Caldera said he was in a chemistry class when he heard gunshots.

«My teacher went to the door to see what was happening. Another teacher ran in and told her to lock the door because there was an active shooter», - 17-year-old Caldera told ABC News. He said his teacher quickly locked the door, and students ran to the back of the room.

Caldera recalled hearing screams outside as they «huddled together», - and someone knocked on the classroom door, shouting «Open up!» several times. When the knocks stopped, he heard more gunshots and screams
