The Kansas City Chiefs are moving to another Kansas City! The relocation to a new stadium will take place in a few years, after their lease at Arrowhead Stadium in Missouri ends.
Team owner and chairman Clark Hunt announced on December 22, 2025, that this move is a «significant milestone for the future of the franchise».
The Chiefs will leave Arrowhead Stadium in Missouri and move to the state of Kansas. The team will receive a new indoor stadium in Kansas City, Kansas.
According to Hunt, the new stadium will be located in Wyandotte County.
«In the coming years, we look forward to designing and building a modern indoor stadium and a multifunctional district in Wyandotte County, as well as a state-of-the-art training facility, team headquarters, and a multifunctional area in Olathe, which will total at least $ 4 billion in investments in the state of Kansas», - Hunt said.
The new modern indoor stadium is set to open at the beginning of the 2031 season.
This will radically change the situation for Kansas.
«We are making Kansas a better place to live, work, and raise a family», - Governor Laura Kelly wrote in her tweet on December 22, 2025.
The Chiefs will move into their new home in Kansas in 2031. «We have reached an agreement with the state of Kansas to host Chiefs games starting with the 2031 NFL season», - Hunt stated.
The Chiefs' lease at Arrowhead Stadium ends after the 2030 football season.
According to the Associated Press, Hunt noted that «some things will not change» for the team in the future, despite the change in location.
«Our fans will still be the loudest in the NFL, our games will remain the best place for pre-game gatherings, and our players and coaches will be ready to compete for championships because on the field or off it, we are big dreamers and ready for the next chapter», - he said.
Although the move has already begun, Hunt emphasized that «there is still a lot of work to be done».
«We are still in the early stages of the process», - he explained. «In the coming months, we will hire an architect and contractor and begin work on a project that will take more than five years».
In short, the Chiefs are moving because Kansas is prepared to offer more funding for stadium construction than Missouri.
In 2024, voters in Jackson County opposed extending a local sales tax that would have helped finance renovations to Arrowhead Stadium. As a result, the Chiefs decided to seek a new location.
At the time of publication, no one from the Chiefs had announced plans to change the team’s name
