What to expect from local businesses on Juneteenth: changes in operati
More than a century after it was first observed, Juneteenth has become a recognized federal holiday. Like all American holidays, this day calls for national celebration, which usually means changes in business hours. So this year, we will tell you what to expect from local businesses. Additionally, learn more about the history and recognition of Juneteenth below.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Under the Emancipation Proclamation of 1862, slaves were recognized as free after the Civil War. Juneteenth was first observed in the mid-1860s in Texas, but it did not become a federal holiday until 150 years later.

Previously, the celebration of Juneteenth was mainly carried out by church communities, as African Americans were prohibited from using public facilities due to racist segregation laws. Over time, other African Americans in the South began to observe this day. Eventually, by the end of the 20th century, all U.S. states and the District of Columbia recognized this day, celebrating the freedom of African Americans and their art.

Juneteenth was declared a federal holiday in 2021, when former President Joe Biden and Congress passed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act. This was the first new federal holiday adopted since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983.

«This is a day of profound weight and profound power, a day when we remember the moral stain, the awful weight that slavery inflicted on the country and continues to inflict», - Biden said at the time, signing the Juneteenth legislation. «I hope this is the beginning of change in how we relate to each other».

Like all federal holidays, some businesses may change their operating hours or close for the day. Supermarkets and grocery stores may adjust their hours in honor of Juneteenth. However, major chains such as Walmart and Target are expected to operate as usual.

Banks, stock exchanges, the post office, schools, and all federal agencies will be closed on Juneteenth. Hourly workers in America should receive paid time off if they work on June 19th
