Lawyer Douglas Emhoff made history as the first Second Gentleman of the United States. He was by his wife Kamala Harris’s side, 59, when the former California senator was sworn in as Vice President of the United States at the Capitol on January 20, 2021, when Joe Biden, 77, became the 46th president. Kamala herself made history as the first woman, Black, and South Asian Vice President of the United States when she and Joe won the presidential election on November 3, 2020, defeating incumbent President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

Shortly after Joe and Kamala’s victory was announced, Douglas posted a sweet photo on Twitter of him embracing his beloved after she heard the wonderful news. «So proud of you», - he wrote in the caption of the photo, adding two red hearts and two American flags.

He was also by Kamala’s side later that evening when she and Joe delivered their first speeches as President-elect and Vice President-elect in Delaware. He confidently held her hand and waved to the crowd after the amazing evening, and Joe even called the happy couple «family» during his epic address to the nation. «Kamala, Doug, whether you like it or not, you’ve become family. You’ve become honorary Bidens, and there’s no way out», - he said with a smile.

His support is unwavering as the 59-year-old husband continues to support his political wife as she runs for president from the Democratic Party. This came after President Biden withdrew his candidacy for the November 2024 elections. She is campaigning alongside her running mate, Tim Walz.

Since Joe announced that Kamala was his choice for Vice President in August, Douglas promised to be «ready to work» as the November 3 elections approached, and that’s exactly what he did. So who is this lucky man who became Kamala’s husband? The answer to that question is below:

Douglas shares a love for law with Kamala. He studied at the University of Southern California Law School and is now a partner at DLA Piper (a global law firm). «He represents major domestic and international corporations and some of today’s most well-known personalities and influential figures in complex business, real estate, and intellectual property matters», - reads Douglas’s biography on the law firm’s website.

One of his clients included TBWA, an advertising agency that developed the Taco Bell Chihuahua. This led to a Michigan company called Wrench suing Taco Bell for breach of contract, claiming they created the «Psycho Chihuahua», - according to Douglas’s profile in The Hollywood Reporter. Douglas helped TBWA avoid financial burden from this lawsuit.

Before Kamala entered his life, Douglas was married to a woman named Kerstin, with whom he had two children (a son named Cole, who graduated from Colorado College in 2017, and their daughter Ella, who is studying at Parsons School of Design, according to a 2018 Vogue article).

After divorcing Kerstin, he was a single father who eventually went on a blind date with Kamala, PR consultant Chrisette Hudlin, in 2013, according to his mentioned profile in THR. It was a great idea, as Douglas and Kamala were married by 2014. Kamala now even has close relationships with Douglas’s children, as well as with her husband’s ex-wife!

«They [Douglas's children] are my source of endless love and pure joy. I am so grateful to Doug, Kerstin, and most of all, Ella and Cole», - the senator wrote in an essay for Elle on Mother’s Day 2019. Douglas and his two children even posed for a cute photo to share
