DEI programs in the USA are under threat: major corporations are aband
Federal diversity, equality, and inclusion programs, known as DEI programs, are ending under the administration of Donald Trump. The President announced in an executive order that he has sent government DEI employees on paid leave as the fate of their employment is in question. Now, major corporations such as Walmart, Costco, and Target in the United States are either cutting back on their internal DEI programs or supporting them.

Find out what some American corporations are doing with their DEI recruitment and employment programs.

On January 24, 2025, Target announced a new plan for its «belonging to the target» strategy. According to CBS News, the retailer is ending a program that helped black employees build their careers, improve the shopping experience for black customers, and promote black-owned businesses nationwide.

«Throughout 2025, we will accelerate actions in key areas and implement changes to stimulate growth and stay ahead of the changing external landscape», - Target said.

The announcement also listed the following actions that Target will discontinue:

According to CBS News, Target’s Chief Community and Equality Impact Officer Kiera Fernandez wrote a memorandum to employees stating, «Many years of data, research, listening, and learning have shaped this next chapter in our strategy. And as a retailer serving millions of consumers every day, we understand the importance of staying ahead of the changing external landscape, now and in the future».

According to multiple sources, Walmart announced its initiative to cut back on DEI programs in November 2024. Among the changes — a review of certain grants at pride events to ensure that Walmart is not funding sexual content that may be inappropriate for minors (for example, Walmart stated that the family pavilion should not be next to a drag show, according to the Associated Press).

«We have come a long way and know that we are not perfect, but every decision comes from a desire to promote a sense of belonging, open doors to opportunities for all our employees, customers, and suppliers, and be Walmart for everyone», - the retail chain said.

Most Costco shareholders voted against a proposal from one shareholder to evaluate their diversity, equality, and inclusion practices. According to CBS News, an anonymous investor made a statement saying, «Diversity, equality, and inclusion may sound harmless on the surface, but in reality, it is a weapon hiding a radical Marxist program», - and claimed that DEI «undermines merit by not hiring and promoting solely based on race and gender».
