Growing up as a child star was not always as fun as it seemed, at least not for Demi Lovato.
The 31-year-old singer made her television debut on the popular children’s show «Barney & Friends». On this show, she met her current former Disney colleague Selena Gomez. Participating in the show with the purple dinosaur allowed her to break into Disney, where she starred in the «Camp Rock» movie franchise at the age of 15.
While she appeared in three movies alongside her co-stars, the Jonas Brothers — Joe, Nick, and Kevin Jonas — the singer of «Heart Attack» not only became an actress, but also began another career, singing, which required her to balance multiple jobs during her teenage years. Additionally, she starred in the Disney series «Sonny with a Chance». Now she recalls these memories as «traumatic». She shared with The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday, August 14th: «I think I pushed myself beyond what I could emotionally and physically handle… And I didn’t realize that being a child star could be traumatic — and it’s not traumatic for everyone, but it was for me».
In the late 2000s, when Disney Channel was at the height of popularity with stars like Miley Cyrus, Raven-Symoné, and Dylan and Cole Sprouse, Demetria Devonne Lovato — her real name — was already familiar with drugs and alcohol. During those times, she suffered in silence.
Demi shared during an interview with Today in 2022: «My mom didn’t think she’d have to lock up opioids from her 13-year-old daughter, but I was already drinking at that time… I was being bullied [and] I was looking for relief. When my mom saw how many pills were missing and how quickly, she took them away [and] locked them up».
The singer of «Starting Over» continued to tell The Hollywood Reporter that she regrets, looking back, how she treated some members of the crew, especially in the costume department, because of the «bad mood» she was experiencing at the time. «It's easy to justify that behavior because I was so young and in so much pain, but I really regret it, and that feeling of guilt stays with you forever», - she said
