Demi Lovato openly shared about her journey with five inpatient mental health treatments during the annual charity event at the Youth Mental Health Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital on June 3rd. «I've been in inpatient treatment five times, and every time I returned to the treatment center, I felt defeated», - shared the 31-year-old singer.

«I know this from my own experience, but I think a ray of hope appeared when I started making efforts and began, whether it was work, a program, or a conversation with my treatment teams, to build relationships there», - shared the singer of «Here We Go Again».

The Youth Mental Health Center is an institution that helps young adults suffering from anxiety and depression and values the importance of guiding them towards a positive and healthy lifestyle.

During the conversation, the former Disney star told Dr. Charlie Shaffer — Anna Wintour’s son: «I think a ray of hope began to appear when I started finding joy in the little things in life. And it was so unfamiliar to me because I was so used to not seeing hope».

Demi was open about her struggles with addiction, especially when it came to her overdose in 2018, which almost cost her her life — something she revealed in her documentary film «Dancing with the Devil».

Despite the support from family and friends, she shared during the event: «I felt like I hit rock bottom, and I just knew what I needed to do, which was to live a life in recovery. And that’s something I had put off for so long».

«I also needed the right medication. I think for me, medication helped tremendously. It helped a lot of people tremendously», - added Demi. «And I thought I hit another bottom, and I thought, 'what am I doing wrong?' I felt defeated. But when all the key pieces started falling into place, like in a perfect puzzle, I started to see the light again».

Although she has faced many difficulties in her life, she described how her past struggles do not define her as a person. «It wasn’t until I went into treatment for the first time that I realized that it’s not me. It’s just a part of what makes me me, my struggles shaped me into the clay you see today, but since then it has never become my identity. It just became a part of me that makes me a bit interesting, you could say», - expressed the singer of «Confident»
