On Monday, February 3, many companies closed their doors in support of the social media campaign «Day Without Immigrants».

Find out more about this movement, who is participating, and much more below.

«Day Without Immigrants» is a national movement aimed at highlighting the critical role that immigrants play in the US economy, as well as protesting recent anti-immigrant policies.

Among these policies are President Trump’s executive orders, including one seeking to end birthright citizenship, and another requiring the detention of undocumented immigrants accused (not necessarily convicted) of crimes such as theft, robbery, larceny, shoplifting, or assaulting law enforcement under the Leiken Riley Law. This allows for detention and potential deportation solely based on an accusation, not a conviction.

Participants are urged not to make purchases, attend school, or work in their communities on February 3.

The social media campaign is a response to President Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant policies, who promised to carry out the largest mass deportation program in US history.

In 2017, «Day Without Immigrants» saw participation from at least 12 states, according to media reports. The movement was a response to highly controversial executive orders and immigration policies targeting undocumented immigrants in his first term.

According to many reports, companies in Maryland, Virginia, Colorado, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Illinois, California, and beyond are joining the movement. While business owners show solidarity, many also note a decrease in sales due to recent harsh measures affecting both employees and customers.

La Casita Pupuseria, a multi-location Salvadoran restaurant in Maryland, expressed their position in a statement posted on social media: «Our Latin American community is the heart of our businesses and an integral part of this country. Today we take the time to reflect on their importance, their efforts, and their daily contributions. This is a time for unity, raising our voices, and showing the value of our people».

According to estimates from the non-partisan Migration Policy Institute in New York, approximately 8.3 million undocumented immigrants work in the US, accounting for over 5% of the country’s workforce.

On February 2, protesters gathered in downtown Los Angeles to protest against the recent surge in Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids under President Trump’s leadership. Thousands of demonstrators, waving Mexican flags and holding signs, marched to Los Angeles City Hall, and then blocked Highway 101 for several hours
