Daniel Radcliffe reacts to Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling’s anti-transgender stance. In a new interview with The Atlantic, published on April 30, 34-year-old Daniel expressed disappointment in her public views.
«It's really sad for me, ultimately», - he told the publication. «I look at the person that I met, the moments that we shared, the books that she wrote, the world that she created, and it’s all so deeply empathetic to me».
In April, 58-year-old J.K. became headline news when she stated that she would not forgive Daniel and his co-star Emma Watson for their support of transgender rights. (In recent years, J.K. has made anti-transgender remarks.)
In his latest interview, Daniel explained that while J.K. helped provide a crucial opportunity for the Harry Potter actors, they still have the right to express their opinions on important issues.
«There's this version of, 'Are these three kids ungrateful brats?' that people have always wanted to write, and finally, they got their wish. So, congratulations to them, I guess», - he said. «Obviously, without her, there wouldn’t be Harry Potter, so probably nothing in my life would have happened the way it has without this person. But that doesn’t mean you have to agree with someone’s sincere beliefs for the rest of your life».
In June 2020, Daniel expressed his support for transgender women by writing a short essay for the Trevor Project, a non-profit organization with a mission to prevent suicide among LGBTQ+ members. In his post, the actor addressed J.K.'s critical remarks about transgender people.
«I understand that some outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, but that really isn’t what this is about, and it’s not what’s important right now», - Daniel wrote. «Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all recommendations of professional medical associations, who have much more expertise in this area than Joe or I».
The actor added that he hopes any controversial remarks from J.K. will not diminish or spoil readers' impressions of the Harry Potter series.
«I really hope you don’t lose what was valuable in these stories for you», - he wrote. «If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that power lies in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of purity lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a certain character is transgender, non-binary, or gender-neutral, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found something in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that’s between you and the book you read, and it’s sacred»
