In the upcoming Paramount+ series, Dennis Quaid plays the serial killer of the 1990s, Keith Hunter Jesperson, otherwise known as the «Smiley Face Killer». The veteran actor, who recently starred alongside Demi Moore in the film «Substance», stars alongside Annaleigh Ashford as his daughter, Melissa G. Moore, and the recently released trailer gave viewers an idea of what to expect from the tense eight-episode drama.

«Smiley Face Killer» is inspired by the eponymous true crime podcast, describing the experience of Melissa, now an adult woman, trying to unravel and come to terms with the influence of her father’s crimes (at least eight murders over five years in the 90s). «Smiley Face Killer follows Melissa (Annaleigh Ashford) and her incarcerated father, known as the 'Smiley Face Killer' (Dennis Quaid)», - the official line reads. «After decades of no contact, he finally finds a way to re-enter his daughter’s life. In a race against time, Melissa must determine whether an innocent man will be executed for a crime committed by her father. Throughout all of this, she discovers the impact her father had on the families of his victims and must confront her own dark past».
Melissa herself wrote in detail about her father’s crimes, particularly in her 2015 book «Breaking the Silence: The Unknown Story of a Serial Killer’s Daughter». «It was as if there was another Keith Hunter Jesperson», - she wrote, discovering her father’s crimes as a teenager in a 2014 essay, according to BBC News. «I caught glimpses of this other person, but I also remembered that when my father came home after long trips in his truck, he was so caring and kind. Sometimes he seemed like such a good father. But on the other hand, he said very strange things. 'You know, I drove past the Oregon State Penitentiary, and I honked,' he told me on the phone once.
