O.J. Simpson’s adult children prefer to keep their lives «private», - especially with the «burden of knowledge [about their late father’s fame]», - his lawyer Malcolm LaVern said in a new interview. After 76-year-old Simpson died of prostate cancer, his children — Sydney, Jason, Justin, and Arnelle — announced his death.
«They are simply mourning their father», - LaVern told Us Weekly on Tuesday, April 16. «Of course, they have the additional burden of knowledge about his fame. And I think for them, it’s a time when they just want to have O.J., their father, just for themselves».
LaVern also told the publication that Simpson will be cremated, and his family is planning a funeral. However, it is unclear whether they want a public memorial for the late former football player.
«The family has always been private. The children have always been private», - added the lawyer. «They remain private, and their feelings and mixed emotions are really the same as anyone else who has lost a loved one due to a long-term illness».
During a separate interview with the Associated Press, Simpson’s executor did not answer whether Simpson had revealed anything to his children on his deathbed.
«Mr. Simpson, as far as I know, expressed his wishes to his children», - LaVern said, apparently referring to Simpson’s preferred burial. «And they will act in accordance with those wishes», - he added. «There have only been preliminary discussions about a memorial service (or) ceremony».
Simpson shared his children Arnelle, Jason, and Aaren with his first wife Marguerite Whitley. Aaren died in a drowning accident when she was 1 year old. Simpson also shared daughter Sydney and son Justin with his ex-wife Nicole Brown.
In 1994, Brown and her friend Ron Goldman were murdered at her Los Angeles apartment. After initially being charged with both murders, Simpson was famously acquitted in 1995. However, he was later found responsible for both of their deaths in 1997. As a result, Simpson had to pay $ 33.5 million to the Brown and Goldman families.
Goldman’s lawyer, David Cook, claimed that Simpson owed over $ 100 million, as interest had been accumulating over the years. In response, LaVern controversially stated that he planned to give the Goldmans «zero», - but soon retracted his statement earlier this week.
