Val Kilmer’s children: Mercedes and Jack — the legacy of the star from «Top Gun»

Val Kilmer had a brilliant acting career from the 1980s until his final years. But his priority was spending time with his children, daughter Mercedes and son Jack. The legacy of the late 65-year-old star of «Top Gun» will be continued through his children, and Val had previously openly talked about Mercedes and Jack in several interviews, especially when he was battling throat cancer.
During an interview with People in August 2020, the late star of «Batman Forever» called his children «geniuses» and said that he «just wildly, wildly enjoys them».
«My only complaint is that I never see them enough, so I never get enough of the wild entertainment that everyone else gets, but they are really, really entertaining», - Val added.

Val was the father of two children, Jack and Mercedes, whom he shared with his ex-wife Joanne Whalley. Val and Joanne were married from 1988 until their divorce in 1996.
Mercedes was born in October 1991. She and her late father grew closer during his final years, when Val was battling throat cancer, from which he recovered. Like him, Mercedes became an actress, and she also worked as a producer on the documentary film «Val».
«Health issues were just so challenging, but so much good came out of it», - Mercedes told People in 2020. «We all spend so much time together. Even just meeting my dad’s friends from before I was born — so many beautiful things happen when you need help from people».
Calling her father «such a smart and creative person», - Mercedes added that she loved to «hang out» with Val, «even if he wasn’t [her] dad».
Mercedes confirmed the news of Val’s death in April 2025. She told The New York Times that he died of pneumonia, and he had recovered from throat cancer before that.
Val and Joanne welcomed their son Jack in June 1995. Like his father, Jack followed the family business, becoming an actor and producer.
Kilmer’s youngest child also opened up about Val’s voice changing during his battle with cancer. In August 2021, Jack told People that he didn’t notice his father’s voice becoming hoarser.
«I'm so used to his voice that maybe when I talk to him, I hear his old voice», - Jack said. «But when he speaks, he doesn’t sound sick. Sometimes it’s impossible to get him to be quiet. It’s hard, but that’s life. We cherish every day we spend with him and around him»
