Liam Conejo Ramos returned home from kindergarten when his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, was detained by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) on January 20, 2026. Liam is only 5 years old. A photograph of the child standing next to an ICE agent went viral and sparked heated discussions across the country.

As events unfold, many are wondering where Liam and his father are now and what will happen to them next. Stay tuned for updates below.

Liam and his father were detained together; however, the Department of Homeland Security insisted that ICE agents «did not target» the 5-year-old child.

«ICE did not target the child. The child was left behind», - the department stated in a tweet last week. «On January 20, ICE conducted a targeted operation to arrest Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, an undocumented immigrant from Ecuador who was released into the U.S. by the [Joe] Biden administration. When agents approached the driver, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias fled on foot, leaving his child behind».

The department’s statement also said: «For the safety of the child, one of our ICE agents stayed with him while other agents detained Conejo Arias. Parents are asked if they want to be deported with their children, or if ICE will place the children with a safe person designated by the parent. This is in line with the immigration policies of previous administrations. Parents can control their deportation and receive a free plane ticket and $ 2,600 through the CBP Home app. Using this app, undocumented immigrants can reserve a way to return legally».

Columbia Heights Public Schools Superintendent Zena Stenvik stated that the Conejo Ramos family «is following U.S. legal norms and has an active asylum case without a deportation order».

«I have seen the legal documents myself», - Stenvik noted, according to FOX9. «Why detain a 5-year-old child? You can’t tell me that this child would be classified as a violent criminal».

According to the family’s attorney, Mark Prokosh, Liam Conejo Ramos and his father are currently at the immigrant processing center in Dilley, Texas
