The two-part documentary film shows David reminiscing about the creation of the six-season series. In the trailer, the writer noted that everyone told him, «You should write a show about your mother and yourself. And I thought, 'Who's gonna watch that?' Then I thought, 'Maybe if [the character] was, like, a real tough guy.'»
Documentarian Alex Gibney analyzes the behind-the-scenes moments that formed the basis of the show’s creation.
The documentary film also reveals that, as David noted in the trailer, «nobody else» besides HBO wanted the series. Although he was already a «TV veteran», - others in the industry knew he had no directing experience.
«I had no idea what I was doing», - David admitted in another part of the trailer. «But I knew it was about money and death». Other creative individuals noted that the theme in David’s pitch was controversial at the time, but they still decided to move forward.
When asked if he sees himself in the character of Tony, the trailer switches and focuses on David’s confession: «The more I did 'The Sopranos,' the more I realized that the movie never ends. It goes on and on. It always fascinated me».
Both parts of the documentary film will be shown consecutively on HBO on September 7th at 8:00 PM Eastern Time. It will also be available for viewing on Max
