The coach of the football team «Buffaloes» of the University of Colorado, Deion Sanders, confirmed what illness he was battling during the offseason. At a press conference held on July 28, 2025, the coach and several medical specialists told journalists how he defeated bladder cancer and what his current health condition is.

Read on to learn about Sanders' medical condition and whether he will return to coaching.

Sanders is now 57 years old.

Sanders revealed at the press conference on July 28, 2025, that he had been battling bladder cancer. During the offseason, he was diagnosed with a tumor and had to have his bladder removed.

At a recent press conference, Sanders warned others to «get screened» to avoid potential tumors.

«Because if it wasn’t for a screening for something else, they wouldn’t have found this», - he noted. «Make sure you’re getting the right treatment, because without amazing people like these, I wouldn’t be sitting here today, because it was growing so fast. But please, get screened».

Dr. Janet Cookreja from UC Health talked about the time interval between Sanders' diagnosis and the tumor removal surgery.

«We proceeded with the removal of the bladder tumor», - Cookreja said. «We removed the tumor. It was high-grade malignancy, invading through the bladder wall, not reaching the muscle layer, which we call high-risk non-invasive bladder cancer».

Dr. Cookreja confirmed at the press conference that Sanders is now cancer-free. «I am pleased to report that the results of the surgery show that he is cured of cancer», - the doctor said.

One of the most common symptoms of bladder cancer is blood in the urine, according to the American Cancer Society. Additional signs of the disease include pain or burning during urination, the need to urinate more often than usual, a feeling of needing to urinate immediately, difficulty urinating, and the need to get up several times at night.

Before the tumor was discovered in Sanders' bladder, he had previously dealt with blood clots in his legs, had two toes amputated, and underwent surgery for chronic blood clots, according to ESPN
