Dickey Betts from the Allman Brothers Band passed away at the age of 80: the cause of his death

Dickey Betts, guitarist and vocalist of The Allman Brothers Band, has passed away. He was 80 years old. Betts' manager, David Spero, announced this on Thursday, April 18, the day of his death.
«With deep sadness and heavy hearts, the Betts family announces the peaceful passing of Forrest Richard 'Dickey' Betts (December 12, 1943 — April 18, 2024) at the age of 80», - the manager said in a statement to Rolling Stone. «The legendary performer, songwriter, band leader, and patriarch of the family was at home in Osprey, Florida, surrounded by his family. Dickey was larger than life, and his loss will be felt around the world».
The statement reads: «At this difficult time, the family requests prayers and respect for their privacy in the coming days. Additional information will be provided in due course».
According to the manager, Betts passed away after battling cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the publication reports. The family of the late musician, known for «Ramblin Man», - also posted the news on his official Instagram account.
Betts is survived by his children — Kimberly, Christie, Jessica, and Duane. He was married five times in his life. In 1989, he entered into his fifth and final marriage with Donna.
In 2018, a native of West Palm Beach, Florida, Betts suffered a mild stroke, which led to the cancellation of his tour with the Dickey Betts Band at the time. That same year, he fell and hit his head at home, resulting in a brain hemorrhage and surgery.
At that time, he returned to performing on stage after a four-year hiatus, as he told Billboard magazine earlier that year.
«When I turned 70, I just decided I wanted to go fishing, play golf, and do all kinds of stuff, so I retired», - he told the publication. «Well, I got bored sitting around. Then I did an interview with Rolling Stone — just to be friendly, I wasn’t working on a career or anything like that — and when it came out, promoters started calling me, offering good money to get back on stage again. I was bored, and they wanted me to come back. That’s how it all happened».
Betts began his musical career at the age of just 5, playing the ukulele. Over time, he formed his own band in his teenage years and eventually helped found the Allman Brothers Band
