Catherine was only 17 years old when she was offered the coveted role of Moana, according to a 2024 press release from the Walt Disney Company.
«My grandfather is from Fa’aala, Palauli, in Savai’i. And my grandmother is from Leulumoega Tuai on the main island of Upolu in Samoa», - said Catherine. «It is an honor for me to be able to represent Samoa and all the peoples of the Pacific region, and to represent young girls like me».
Her father, actor and writer Jay Laga’aia, could not hide his excitement about his daughter’s major film role.
«My family and I are so excited to share this news with the rest of the world», - Jay wrote on Instagram at the time. «My daughter Katie can finally share the news that she will be playing the role of Moana in Disney’s live-action film alongside Dwayne Johnson and [producer] Lin-Manuel Miranda», - Jay captioned his post. «Also joining Laga’aia and Johnson in the cast are John Tui from Auckland, New Zealand, as Moana’s father, Chief Tui; playing Moana’s mother, Sina, is mixed Samoan-New Zealand actress Frankie Adams; and Rena Owen, from Bay of Islands, New Zealand, as the respected Gramma Tala.
