In Tallahassee, Florida, Jamie Jakes was arrested on charges of child neglect after authorities discovered six children living in «uninhabitable» conditions. She was taken into custody on October 4 and charged with six counts of child neglect.
The situation came to light when police officers noticed a vehicle that nearly struck a boy as it entered a gas station around 3:10 a.m. Upon returning the boy home, officers found three more children, two of whom were dressed only in wet diapers, and one was wearing only pants. During a further investigation at Jakes' home, three more children were found without clothing, sleeping on a single bed unsupervised. Officers noted that the children’s clothing was «wet and smelled of mold».
According to one officer, the house was in an uninhabitable condition: feces and urine were on the floor. Each room contained used diapers, spoiled food, and trash, while the refrigerator had insects and spoiled products. One of the children reported that they had been left alone while Jakes went to the store two hours earlier; however, police believe the children had been unsupervised since 5:00 p.m. on October 3.
Jakes returned home around 6 a.m. and was arrested. She claimed that she paid a neighbor $ 150 a week to watch the children from Thursday to Sunday, but that person denied the claim. Jakes also stated that her house was clean the day before the children were discovered; however, police noted that «old feces and urine» did not support that timeline. It is currently unclear whether Jakes has entered a plea or hired an attorney following her arrest. The Tallahassee police did not respond to a request for comments regarding updates in this case.
