Justin and Kate met in February 2012 while filming a commercial for the video game Major League Baseball 2K12. After several breakups, the couple got engaged in May 2016 and married the following year in Tuscany, Italy. Verlander has previously noted that Kate has been an important support for him during difficult times, including his recovery from surgery.
