Update on August 10, 2019 at 1:52 PM Eastern Time: The Federal Bureau of Prisons released a press release stating: «On Saturday, August 10, 2019, at approximately 6:30 AM, inmate Jeffrey Edward Epstein was found unresponsive in his cell in the Special Housing Unit at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in New York, New York. Staff immediately initiated life-saving measures. Staff requested emergency medical services (EMS), and life-saving efforts continued. Mr. Epstein was transported by EMS to a local hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries and subsequently pronounced dead by hospital medical staff. The FBI is investigating the incident.

«Mr. Epstein was a 66-year-old male who arrived at MCC New York on July 6, 2019, under pretrial detention status after being charged with human trafficking and conspiracy with minors.

MCC New York is a secure administrative facility currently housing 763 male inmates in New York."

Jeffrey Epstein, a financier accused of human trafficking in July 2019, was found dead in his cell in New York on August 10, officials reported, citing The New York Times.

Epstein hanged himself, and his body was found around 7:30 AM on August 10 at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan. He was 66 years old. He was taken from the prison to a hospital in Lower Manhattan. Upon arrival, he was in cardiac arrest, according to people familiar with the situation, citing NBC News.

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan charged Epstein with sex trafficking of young girls — some as young as 14. He was arrested on July 6, 2019, at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey.

For decades, Epstein had been at the center of allegations that he paid dozens of girls for sexual acts in Florida. In 2005, the Palm Beach police began an investigation after a parent reported that he had assaulted her 14-year-old daughter. Prosecutors reached a widely criticized deal, allowing him to plead guilty to a crime related to underage prostitution and serve 13 months in prison.

A month before his suicide, Epstein was found unresponsive in his cell in the Manhattan prison with marks on his neck, NYT reported. Prison staff investigated the incident as a possible suicide attempt. It was not immediately clear on August 10 whether authorities had taken additional measures to monitor him after the first incident.

He began his career in finance at the investment bank Bear Stearns. Later, he founded his own firm, J. Epstein & Co. He had luxurious homes and a private jet. He also had connections to elite circles
