Jeremy Renner narrowly escaped death in a snowmobile accident in January 2023 — possibly too close for comfort. In his new book «My Next Breath», - the Marvel actor wrote that he believed he had died while waiting for emergency help to arrive.
The «Mayor of Kingstown» actor appeared on CBS Mornings on April 29, 2025 and admitted that he had hesitated in writing a memoir that he «didn't consider… valuable» at one point.
«I survived this. It was a private incident that happened in my driveway. Why does anyone care?» Jeremy asked during the interview, promoting the book. «But the act of writing — what I want people to take from the book [is] going out of your way is very important to achieve and get everything you want in your life, and that’s a lesson I had to learn to go out of my way and share the story, because I knew it was valuable. It would be foolish of me not to share it».
Find out below what happened to Jeremy and learn his perspective on what really happened to him.
While in Nevada on January 1, 2023, Jeremy was operating his snowmobile and prevented his nephew from being crushed by a 14,000-pound rig. As a result, Jeremy was crushed by the machine and had to be airlifted to the hospital. He was treated in the intensive care unit, and was released from the hospital almost three weeks later.
For three months after the accident, Jeremy was able to walk with a cane and gradually regain strength for public appearances and returning to work.
Jeremy broke 38 bones as a result of the New Year’s Day 2023 snowmobile accident. Among the most serious injuries was a collapsed lung.
A few days after being hospitalized, Jeremy began sharing moments on Instagram from his journey to recovery.
Jeremy claims in his book «My Next Breath» that he died, and none of his family knew about it at the time.
«When I lay on the ice, my pulse slowed down, and that’s when, on this New Year’s Day, unknown to my daughter, my sisters, my friends, my father, my mother, I just got tired», - the actor wrote in one of the memoir excerpts. «After about 30 minutes on the ice, breathing manually for so long, an effort similar to doing 10 or 20 push-ups per minute for an hour and a half… that’s when I died. I died right there, in my driveway».
Although we may never know if Jeremy’s heart actually stopped that day, he insisted in the book that it was true.
«I know I died — I’m really sure of it», - the actor added. «When the paramedics arrived, they noted that my pulse had dropped to 18, and at 18 beats per minute you’re practically dead».
Despite the frightening incident, Jeremy noted in his book that he was in an «exciting world» during the near-death experience.
«When I died, what I felt was an energy, constantly connected, beautiful and fantastic energy», - Jeremy added. «There was no time, no place, no space, and nothing was visible except a kind of electric, two-way vision, created from the threads of this unimaginable energy… I was in space: no sound, no wind, nothing, except this extraordinary electricity, to which I am connected with everyone and everything, with anyone and anything. I am in every moment, in one moment, magnified to a number beyond mathematics».
Jeremy added: «What came to me on that ice was an exciting world, the deepest adrenaline rush, but at the same time completely calm: electric calm. I still feel that space, quiet, calm, empty, but filled with every moment and all eternities, and for the first time in my existence it has nothing to do with time. It was absolutely beautiful, filled with understandable magic»
