A man who attacked a 13-year-old boy and severely cut his neck with a box cutter in Daytona Beach has received a lengthy prison sentence. According to the prosecution, on October 15, Jerman Lynn Long pleaded guilty to aggravated battery and attempted second-degree murder, as well as six charges in three other cases.
Long was sentenced to 45 years in prison, 30 of which are related to his status as a «released prison offender». The attack occurred on February 14, when Long approached the boy from behind and cut his neck, then fled the scene, which was captured by surveillance cameras. The boy’s mother, Lori Nicole Clark, and other witnesses witnessed the attack, which required the teenager to receive 13 stitches.
The boy, Sullivan Clark, now 14, told the judge that he nearly died and that his neck is left with a scar. In court, he stated, «I do not forgive him». Long also apologized in court, saying he did not know what he was doing at the time. Sullivan’s mother expressed frustration that Long had not been arrested earlier when, she said, he had struck a man with a sledgehammer.
Long’s attorney, Stephen Robinson, stated that his client «remains extremely remorseful» and did not want anyone else to experience this event again. Volusia County Prosecutor R. J. Larizza noted that «a very dangerous person is now off the streets for 45 years».
