Jake Luppen, the frontman of the band Hippo Campus, has announced that he will undergo a six-hour open brain surgery following the diagnosis of a tumor. In his Instagram post, he shared that the surgery is scheduled for November 6 and expressed confidence in his surgical team.
Luppen revealed that seven years ago, a «9 mm tumor» was discovered near his basal ganglia, which are responsible for motor functions and cognitive processes, after an MRI was performed due to recurring migraines. A routine examination this summer indicated possible growth of the tumor, leading to an EEG. The musician noted that the panic symptoms he experienced were actually focal seizures.
Luppen is receiving treatment at the renowned Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, where he was diagnosed with «stage two glioma». Doctors determined that a craniotomy is necessary to remove the tumor for his recovery, as its critical location makes a biopsy too risky. The surgery will require him to remain awake so that surgeons can safely access the tumor.
He also mentioned that it may take some time after the surgery before he can perform again. In light of this, Hippo Campus has scheduled a concert at the historic Turf Club in their hometown of St. Paul, which will take place on October 19. Tickets for the event sold out within hours. Luppen promised to do his best to return to the stage as soon as possible and vowed to keep fans updated on his condition.
