James McAvoy spoke about a serious life-threatening situation he faced before filming «Glass» in 2017. During his appearance on Dax Shepard’s podcast on October 12, the actor revealed that he underwent a lung biopsy due to suspected cancer, but it turned out later that he was not ill.
McAvoy noted that the procedure was unsuccessful, and he nearly died. Two days after the biopsy, he experienced a lung collapse while he was home alone. The actor spent «two or three weeks» in the hospital following the failed intervention. He recalled that doctors attempted to clear his lungs but were unsuccessful, ultimately deciding to perform a more serious operation.
After being discharged from the hospital, McAvoy worked hard to regain his physical fitness for filming «Glass», - the sequel to «Split», - in which he plays the character Kevin Wendell Crumb, who suffers from dissociative identity disorder. The actor emphasized that unlike «Split», - in «Glass», - he spent most of the time playing his character «The Beast», - who possesses superhuman abilities.
McAvoy also talked about his trainer, who helped him recover after his illness. He mentioned that at the beginning of his rehabilitation, he couldn’t run or ride a bike, but his trainer helped him get back in shape quickly. In 2019, the actor shared his experience in Men’s Journal, noting that this incident made him rethink his choice of roles in the future.
