Joe Manganiello shared details about his serious health issues and the use of a colostomy in his new book «Bloodlines: A Memoir». In an excerpt published by The Hollywood Reporter on October 8, the actor described how surgery left him with significant scars and a colostomy, which was necessary after his colon began to rupture.
Manganiello recalled that in 2016, when he collapsed while filming in Wilmington, North Carolina, his condition deteriorated rapidly. He described that period as «A Night in Hell», - when his colon began to fester, and he lost a lot of blood. According to him, if he had not undergone surgery, he could have died from sepsis. The actor noted that his then-wife, Sofia Vergara, made the difficult decision regarding the need to remove his colon.
After the surgery, Manganiello faced numerous challenges, including significant weight loss and the need to adapt to life with a colostomy. In his book, he described how he experienced nervous breakdowns and sleep issues, as well as incidents related to colostomy leaks.
Despite his serious condition, Manganiello received an offer to play the villain Deathstroke in a Batman film. However, his health remained fragile, and Vergara tried to convince him not to take part in the project. Nevertheless, he continued to prepare for the role, which led to a colostomy incident during a flight to London.
Manganiello also spoke about his attempts to find treatment for his mysterious illness, which yielded no results, and how he ultimately found relief through unconventional methods. His book «Bloodlines» will be released on October 13.
