In the list of things that embody America, you have apple pie, baseball, and Joey Chestnut, who devours dozens of hot dogs on the Fourth of July. Unfortunately, for fans of Nathan’s annual hot dog eating contest on Coney Island, the professional eater will not be participating in the event this year for the first time since 2006.

It was announced that Joey would not be allowed to compete in the event, as reported by The New York Post. The newspaper reported that the world record holder was excluded due to a deal he made with Impossible Foods, a pioneer in the vegan food market, such as the plant-based Impossible Burger. The company reportedly launched its own line of vegan hot dogs, and Joey signed a brand representation agreement.

The publication reported that Major League Eating (yes, it’s a real thing) worked with Joey to come to an agreement, even allowing him to participate in the Labor Day hot dog eating contest, which would not mention the brand name.

Although Joey’s new partnership represents a significant shift in the annual hot dog eating contest, MLE shared that they would be open to his return if they can come to an agreement. «We are saddened to learn that Joey Chestnut has chosen to represent a competitive brand that sells vegan hot dogs, rather than participate in the 2024 Nathan’s hot dog eating contest on the Fourth of July», - they said in a statement to The Post. «Joey Chestnut is an American hero. We would like nothing more than to see him at the international Nathan’s hot dog eating contest. We hope he returns when not representing a competitive brand».

Joey has not yet publicly commented on the split, but contest host and organizer George Shea opened up about how much of a «gut punch» the decision to end their partnership was in an interview with The New York Times. «It would be like in the old days when Michael Jordan came to Nike, which made his Air Jordans, and said, 'I'm just going to advertise Adidas too,'» he said. «For me, it’s tradition; it’s about New York; it’s about the Fourth of July. But maybe that’s just my opinion, not how it is for everyone».

Joey has been participating in Nathan’s hot dog eating contest since 2006, and he has won 16 times after dethroning former champion Takeru Kobayashi in 2007. In 2021, he set a new record for the number of hot dogs eaten in 10 minutes when he ate 76 sausages during the Fourth of July contest
