Nathan Fielder’s documentary about Elizabeth Holmes titled «You Can See Everything» has become a box office hit and an Oscar contender. This was reported by Variety’s awards editor Clayton Davis in an interview with Derek Hawk from Extra.
Davis noted that Fielder spent 34 days with Holmes before her imprisonment. The film also explores Holmes' relationship with her husband Billy and her family history, featuring interesting cameos and recreations of events. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Holmes, the former CEO of the startup Theranos, is serving a sentence for defrauding investors.
Davis emphasized the film’s success, pointing to its high ratings: 99 on Metacritic, 98 on Rotten Tomatoes, and 9.4 on IMDb, which is higher than «The Godfather». He added that if the film grosses $ 100 million at the box office, it would be «insane».
Although Nathan Fielder is known as a comedian from the shows «Nathan for You» and «The Rehearsal», - Davis noted that he aims to make the world a better place by combining humor with serious issues. In the film, Fielder asks Holmes why she turned to him, and seemingly does not know how he ended up in this situation himself.
Regarding the Oscars, Davis reminded that in 98 years, no documentary has been nominated for Best Picture. He believes that «You Can See Everything» has a good chance for a nomination and suggests that Nathan Fielder and his co-director Lance Oppenheim may receive a nomination for directing. The film is currently in theaters.
